When something is done to someone, that is the passive voice. When you do something to someone, that is the active voice. The active voice is always the best voice to use, because:
- It is more interesting, because action always is (you’re welcome, Bruce Willis)
- It uses fewer words
- It forces you to get to the point more quickly (and you don’t lose easily-bored readers)
Passive example:
The board was told of the new branch closing procedures by Jim Smith.
Active example:
Jim Smith explained the new closing procedures to the board.
Write strong, people!
